Anjuna.
I have been here 5 days and i can honestly say that I don't like Anjuna much. Not Anjuna the place. I think i mean the people. The men here are HARD. They only see you as money. They look at you and don't see the service that they give, but rather the dollar at the end (rupee).
It's really disheartening and for that reason i have stopped taking taxis. These men are not Indians. They are like prehistoric capitalists. It's futile even to argue with them, and for that reason i have had to learn to walk away.
Secondly, there is a real raver/trance/dance/drug community going on here. Now of course we all know that i am judgemental but let me set the scene:
It's 10pm at night. We are on the beachfront at a place called Curly's. There is a trance party going on here that started at 1pm. We walk through about 5 children playing in the sand. But not sweet playing, we are talking feral playing. The type where kids are bullying and throwing sand and pushing etc. There are drugs everywhere and people are drinking and dancing and spilling out all over the beach.
There are kids everywhere, those 5 were just the beginning. Parents are walking around in skimpy clothing with a baby in one hand and a joint in the other.
Look, it's okay to slightly expose your children to drugs, but this is ridiculous -
- children playing at 10pm at night
- children playing in an area where alcohol and drugs are accessible
- children playing in an area where Indian men have taken ecstasy or are completely intoxicated. These men act like 14yr olds when this happens - not good for small girls.
- Children playing in an area where the is WATER (please consider that a grown man almost drowned here two days ago)
I have to say, it's not pretty. It makes me angry and also sad.
These children are completely FERAL. They have this rabid look.
I was curious of course so i went to speak to a father. I asked him what would happen now that the party was over (the end of the party) and he said, 'oh everyone will go home, but really we would all like to have a REAL party and get a bit hardcore (English accent pls)'.
'Is this your child?' I ask, pointing to and toddler in a blanket on the ground asleep.
'Yes, I have three.'
'Where are the others'
'I don't know exactly. Can't say for sure. They were here a minute ago. They've gone. Oh well. Guess I'll have another beer and joint. I'll probably see them in an hour or so.'
OH MY GOD.
wow I'm riled up at the thought. i think I'm going to go swimming.
ps. I dont take drugs, but i don't condemn it with absolute-ness. If you take drugs, good for you. Don't convince, expose or impress them upon others.
