Beef with Cinders.
The time is 12am and I feel like Cinderella. I am home on the dot and I didn’t even lose my shoe.
The lost shoe can be thought of as a symbol. I’m sure you understand that Cinderella lost her shoe, which was a way for her to be still connected with the world. Cinders wasn’t just another pretty face that vanished into a singular void, regalia in tact.
But I have a couple of questions that lead on from there. Is there such thing as a Prince Charming who actually runs after you? And if I left something behind, isn’t it more likely to go to ‘lost property’? Or rather for a female to find it and run after me? Isn’t the most likely scenario that it just gets left there and nobody picks it up?
It’s time I used a post-modern statement: The age of fairytale is dead.
I enjoyed writing that.
How many times have I willed a fairytale to happen to me? How many times have I balanced the probability of a fairytale NEVER happening, only in the hope that it actually does?
Then, in a fit of self help, one must ask the question; can one make their own fairytale? Well it takes a lot of money and plastic surgery and you are not guaranteed full mental health at the end of it either.
However, Cinderella did not create her own fairytale. No, she just sat back oblivious. Oblivious? I think not. I knew Cinderella was unhappy. Did you? I knew she didn’t like her step sisters. I knew she was miserable. She knew it too.
What made her so special? We all have sob stories, so why did Cinders get the miracle?
I think there is no answer, because Cinderella just got lucky. She didn’t deserve it any more than her step sisters. Sure her step sisters were loved by their mother, but how do you think it was growing up without a father? I mean Cinderella was not the only one. And yes it is hard living with a parent that despises you, but don’t we all feel that sometimes? And if it isn’t a parent being harsh to a child, isn’t the child harsh to the parent? I ask you then, was Cinderella so deserving of the fairytale that has permeated our calendar year?
I think Cinderella was more fortunate than most which tells me that a fairytale cannot happen to everyone. After all, the twin sisters didn’t have it. The evil mother didn’t have it. The mice didn’t get it and the Prince didn’t either.
What, you think the Prince saw this as a fairytale? No, he saw it as was rightfully his. He can get any woman he wants, let’s face it. He is hot stuff and no woman is going to say no. This wasn’t a fairytale for the Prince, no this was a conquest. And do you think he isn’t cheating on her? We all know he’s going to get bored. Any man who has a queen for a mother is never going to find one woman for the rest of his life.
I realise that this is all very cynical. But the point remains. Fairytales don’t exist. I keep waiting for it, keep hoping and adding romance to my life, but it just isn’t there.
I don’t know if I deserve a fairytale. But I damn well want one.
