Okay so. (famous always words)
I have downloaded Gwen Stafani's new album.
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT.
seriously.. i's like a try-hard-madonna-come-random montage of sounds and pop culture references which makes no sense. It's like her whole Alice in Wonderland theme only she got it wrong. Her first album was great because it was new and original. The follow-up is like trying to write a sequel to Alice in Wonderland - impossible.
Take the song 'don't get it twisted'.
Can everyone just think back to Search for America's next Top Model like three season's ago - it was one of the contestants who claimed that they created a phrase "Don't get it twisted". And i think that reference will conjure up images of clicking the fingers. Now it is clear that this phrase sparked some sort of song idea for someone to write and then for Gwen to take - exactly like Madonna does (with her stealing of multiple post-modern pop culture creations) ONLY there is not RESPECT paid for it. Also, circus theme for that song (which people remember from a circus and also from that maths game people played in school) just doesn't cut it. The reference is lost - what does getting it twisted have to do with the circus? At least with wind-it-up, when she yodels, there is kind of a reference to mating calls or something (which is basically what that song is about). writing a pop song is NOT easy, contrary to what everyone thinks. Especially for someone like Stefani who wants to be the "it".
Now one has to ask, aren't the 'minimal-beat songs' that Pharrel is famous for just a LITTLE out dated? They were SO 2 years ago. Pharrell seriously needs to get a new theme. (reference to the song YUMMY).
Now I like 'early winter', but let's face it: that should be part of a WHOLE OTHER ALBUM - it's totally not in with the theme. Sounds more like No doubt about 4 years ago. And it's not even that good.
Orange County Girl? HELLO copy of Pink. And not only that, it's sung like some sort of new-age diva like Ciara or JoJo... And like, the sarcasm in her voice again doesn't make the cut for the actual song - everything is NOT connected.
'The Sweet Escape' song and 'Now that you got it' are the only ones that i personally like. they are connected, fun and celebrate things rather than put them down. If one must compare, someone like Pink may have a song that puts down the popular culture but then the majority of them put herself up and sort appeal to those misfits and make them feel good. Gwen has just gone sour. Not appealling at all.
okay now i know you are wondering WHY i wrote that. I, like you, have no idea. It's just so hard to find a good pop album these days. I'm struggling.
ALSO what the HELL is going on with her G logo? AND WHY HASN'T GUCCI SUED YET?
